Toronto is ranked 23rd among the world’s best cities

Toronto has been recognized as one of the top 25 cities in the world to live and work in 2024, according to the rankings by the global consulting company Resonance Consultancy.

The company evaluated over 270 major cities with a population of over one million to determine the top 100 destinations for living, visiting, and investing worldwide.

The rankings are based on various metrics and categorized into three pillars: Livability (including walkability, bike lanes, landmarks, and airport connectivity); Lovability (evaluating nightlife, restaurants, shopping districts, attractions, and social media presence); and Prosperity (analyzing education and wealth, including educational attainment, workforce participation, and per capita GDP).

The diverse population, construction projects, and friendly environment of Toronto were highlighted in the report.

Other Canadian cities, including Vancouver (#50), Montreal (#60), Ottawa (#90), and Calgary (#93), also made the list.

Toronto’s ranking has fluctuated over the past few years, with positions of #13 in 2021, #18 in 2022, #24 in 2023, and #23 in 2024. The top 10 cities in the 2024 rankings include London, Paris, New York City, Tokyo, Singapore, Dubai, San Francisco, Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Seoul.

Raising children in Canada can be quite expensive, as data from Statistics Canada reveals that a family with an average income, consisting of a couple with two children, spends an average of $293,000 to raise one child until they turn 17.

For families with low incomes, earning less than $83,013 per year before taxes, the cost of raising a child decreases to about $238,190, while families with higher incomes earning over $135,970 per year will spend approximately $403,910 per child.

If children continue to live in their family’s home from ages 18 to 22, there may be additional costs ranging from $68,000 to $117,000 per child, depending on the family size and income.

The data is based on household expenditure surveys conducted from 2014 to 2017 and indicates that families allocate a significant portion of their income to housing, transportation, food, childcare, and education.

Recent childcare measures in Canada, including reduced childcare fees, have provided some financial relief to parents, and the government has allocated $30 billion over 5 years for the national childcare program.

High living costs are considered a significant factor contributing to delayed and reduced fertility, as young adults face increasing challenges in covering the expenses associated with raising children. According to StatCan data, the cost of raising children for single parents ranges from $231,260 for low-income single parents to $372,110 per child for those in the middle to high-income bracket.

The Liberal Party has introduced a scholarship program to commemorate the victims of the 2020 Iran plane shootdown of Flight PS752.

The program will award 176 scholarships, each dedicated in memory of those who lost their lives when the Ukraine International Airlines flight was shot down outside Tehran.

The victims included 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents, many of whom had significant educational achievements in Canada.

The scholarships will have an average value of $25,000 per recipient among the 176, with a total of $4.4 million to be distributed over 5 years, and each scholarship named after a victim.

The scholarship was first announced in January 2022. The applications for the first round opened on October 4 and will close after 28 days.

Both international and domestic Canadian students studying at a college or university in Canada can apply if their research focuses on aviation disaster prevention or a related field of study or work related to one of the victims.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Department aims to award approximately 30% of the scholarships to Canadian candidates and the remaining 70% to international applicants.

Applicants are required to write a letter explaining “how your chosen field of study relates to the victims” and “why you feel a connection to the victims.” The letter must also address the applicant’s understanding of the incident and how they plan to contribute to the legacy of those who lost their lives.

Toronto vừa có thêm 2 nhà hàng được trao tặng sao Michelin danh giá.

Tại buổi thuyết trình đặc biệt được tổ chức tại HISTORY ở Toronto, Michelin tiết lộ rằng tổng cộng 82 nhà hàng sẽ được giới thiệu trong Cẩm nang Michelin, trong đó có 14 nhà hàng một sao MICHELIN.

Theo Giám đốc quốc tế của Michelin, sự kiện này “một lần nữa chứng minh Toronto là điểm đến ẩm thực đẳng cấp thế giới”.

During a special presentation held at HISTORY in Toronto, Michelin revealed that a total of 82 restaurants would be featured in the Michelin Guide, including 14 one-star MICHELIN restaurants.

According to Michelin’s International Director, this event “once again proves that Toronto is a world-class culinary destination.”

To compile the list, anonymous inspectors dined at various eateries across the city, evaluating restaurants through a secretive process. Subsequently, restaurants were awarded one, two, or three stars based on their exceptional culinary offerings.

Only two restaurants received one Michelin star this year:

  • Kappo Sato at 575 Mt. Pleasant Rd., and
  • Restaurant 20 Victoria at 20 Victoria St.

Less than 500 restaurants worldwide have been awarded two Michelin stars, and Sushi Maisaki Saito remains the only Toronto restaurant to achieve this distinction.

Earning the coveted three-star honor is even more prestigious, as only 140 restaurants globally have been awarded it.

Canada’s first “MICHELIN Green Star” award, recognizing restaurants engaged in sustainable practices, was presented to Frilu and White Lily Diner.

Michelin also acknowledged restaurants recommended for a return visit, continuing to impress their anonymous inspectors. The list includes Aloette, Canoe, George, and Pai, among others. The ceremony also recognized 12 new restaurants proposed for inclusion in this year’s Toronto guide, along with the Bib Gourmand restaurants, both of which were unveiled before the event. Bib Gourmands are appointed to high-quality establishments that can provide diners with two courses and a glass of wine (or dessert) for under $60.

The annual salmon run has returned to the rivers in Toronto.

The Ontario salmon run typically begins in early September and extends until early November. The mid to late October period tends to be the peak of the season. Thanksgiving weekend is often a popular time, but the salmon migration truly depends on the weather and water temperature.

The phenomenon of the Ontario salmon run occurs when the water temperature ranges from 3°C to 18°C. During this time, the migration will witness Chinook, Atlantic, Pink, and Coho salmon passing through the waters near Toronto.

These fish can reach sizes of up to 15 pounds, so watching them leap and navigate the rushing river currents is something you should see at least once.

The best observation points include areas with obstacles like waterfalls.

Among the most famous spots to witness the salmon run, Toronto residents can enjoy this spectacle from Etienne Brulé Park and Old Mill Bridge on the Humber River, the Highland Creek valley, and the Charles Sauriol Conservation Area.

While the salmon run may be an exciting event for us humans, it’s a lifelong struggle for the salmon. Salmon must use their last ounce of strength to overcome obstacles in the river and reach their spawning grounds. After laying their eggs, salmon die, leaving a new generation to fend for themselves.

This serves as a reminder to appreciate these annual underwater acrobatics, as the quick videos and snapshots will be the last time anyone sees these fish alive.

The Rockies Canada comprise four national parks in Alberta and BC: Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, and Yoho. These parks offer excellent opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing, with notable attractions such as Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, Mount Edith Cavell in Jasper National Park, and the Burgess Shale in Yoho National Park.
