Operation Smile Lights Up Little Faces

About Operation Smile

Founded in 1982, Operation Smile is a non-governmental health charity organization that provides free, reconstructive surgeries for children with craniofacial anomalies. It became a pioneer in providing safe, timely, good quality surgical care even in severely impoverished remote areas. Operation Smile also deploys dental programs to diagnose, treat and spread basic dental knowledge to help elementary school students.

Operation Smile Vietnam

One in every 700 babies in Vietnam is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. Every year, there are 3,000 newborns with this condition. More than 10,000 of them have not yet received surgical repair.

In 1988, John Connor, a Vietnam War veteran, approached Operation Smile about assisting Gen. John W. Vessey Jr with the first post-war humanity mission by Americans. Operation Smile’s volunteer medical team with 38 members landed in Vietnam in 1989 and became the largest group visiting the nation after the war. Operation Smile provided the same service as they had done before and since, to treat Vietnamese with craniofacial birth defects. The organization has partnered with governments, ministries of health, hospitals, individuals, and patrons to conduct training and scientific exchange programs. It also donates much-needed supplies, equipment, and personnel to patient programs.

Activities

Public communication

Besides improving medical quality, the organization spreads a positive spirit through its social media platforms. Operation Smile Vietnam reflects the emotions of people who stay committed to giving a smile to a child in need.

Fundraising

To maintain the activities of the organization, Operation Smile Vietnam holds annual fundraising marathons. Sportswear sales also help to raise funds. Choosing these shirts means giving the kids with cleft lips or cleft palates a chance to reach a turning point in their lives. Operation Smile Vietnam uses online payment tools such as Momo and Zalopay in Vietnam, to make it more convenient for donors.

Smile Ambassadors

Tran Dang Dang Khoa, a world travel-enthusiast who has an optimistic mindset and a radiant smile, is the organization’s Smile Ambassador. He has spent 1,111 days traveling to seven continents and 62 countries before COVID-19. The positivity that he exudes draws attention and contributions to the organization, helping to bring Vietnamese children bright and broad smiles.
