Lotus Charity Foundation in Saigon

Lotus Charity Foundation has been in operation for nine years with a network of 15 eateries selling meals that cost only VND 2,000 (C$ 0.11) across the country. The organization started with restaurants named Smile in 2012 in Saigon and expanded to other provinces under the name Peace.

Lotus Foundation is making an effort to shift from humanitarian charity to inclusive charity. If humanitarian charity provides daily meals for people in need, inclusive charity gives them an opportunity to earn a living.

Vietnam has 100,000 people a lower limb disability, 10 per cent of whom (about 10,000) struggle to make a living on the streets. While developed countries often offer benefits, accessibility routes and welfare for the disabled, in Vietnam, they are often forgotten. Every day, there are about 10,000 people in wheelchairs travelling from place to place to sell lottery tickets. Some have to use crutches because they can’t afford to buy a wheelchair.

Lotus Foundation participated in the research and manufacturing of special electric tricycles for the disabled. Before market markup they cost VND 12 million (C$ 650) to make. With the motto of “Tricycles for all disabled people who make a living,” Lotus Foundation sells the tricycles to the disabled at 98 per cent less than the market price of VND 15 million (C$ 824). That means they only have to pay VND 300,000 (C$16) for one.

The organization knows that disabled people earn only VND 500 (C$ 0.03) for every lottery ticket sold, so VND 300,000 is a tremendous amount. However, by selling them the tricycles (and not giving them away), Lotus Foundation shows respect for the disabled and encourages them to make an effort to rise above their challenges.

With a donation of only VND 12 million (C$650 or US$520), you can help a disabled person make a living on the streets.

Some of the milestones Lotus Foundation has achieved:

Lotus Foundation has:

  • Sold 4,075,259 meals at VND 2,000 or VND 1,000 apiece through its network of 15 restaurants all over the country
  • Supported the treatment costs of 495 cases of fatal diseases
  • Organized projects to help children go to school and prevent dropouts
