Former Liberal MP Marwan Tabbara Pleads Guilty, Gets 3 Years Probation

Former Liberal MP Marwan Tabbara pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and one of being unlawfully in a dwelling house in a virtual courtroom on Thursday said Crown attorney Ian Bulmer.

“The sentence imposed was a conditional discharge with probation for three years with various additional terms (in addition to the statutory terms), a five-year weapons prohibition order (under section 110 of the Criminal Code) and a DNA databank order,” Mr. Bulmer said.

Mr. Bulmer did not wish to provide further comment on the case.

The Kitchener South—Hespeler MP was arrested in nearby Guelph on April 9, 2020, but the public was not made aware of the charges until Global News first reported them on June 5.

Mr. Tabbara was first elected in 2015 in the riding, which includes the Hespeler area of Cambridge and the southern portion of Kitchener.

After the charges were revealed, Mr. Tabbara left the Liberal caucus.

Earlier this month, Mr. Tabbara said in a statement that he would be “stepping back” from the Liberal caucus while the matter proceeds through the courts.

“Other than to state unequivocally that every incident of violence is unacceptable and inexcusable, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further while this matter is before the court,” he said.

Mr. Tabbara, 35, said he is receiving counselling for anxiety and depression. Mr. Tabbara chose not to seek re-election this year.
