Forbes’  “Fab 50” list, in its 12th year, comprises companies chosen from a pool of 1,542 in the Asia-Pacific region with at least $1.7 billion in annual revenue. The 272 companies that have made an appearance at least once demonstrate the evolving nature of business in the region. For example, in 2005, five wireless telecom companies were represented; this year there were none. The 2005 list also saw 11 tech hardware companies, but only six appeared this year. Interestingly, no property developers were listed in the first three years but they’ve been well-represented since.

A total of 22 Chinese companies dominate this year’s list, marking the country’s 6th year in a row in first place. E-commerce giant Alibaba Group leads the pack with the highest market value. Chinese property developer Country Garden made a comeback for the second time after a four-year absence.

India claims the second highest placement with eight companies including Aurobindo Pharma, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank, Indusind Bank, Motherson Sumi Systems, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, and Tech Mahindra. South Korea places third with five companies – Amorepacific, BGF Retail, Hanon Systems, LG Household & Health Care, and Naver.

Vietnam’s first entrant is Vietnam Dairy Products. Since going public in 2003, Vietnam Dairy Products is now the nation’s largest dairy company and fifth largest public company listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange.

Other companies that have made the top 50 include Hong Kong’s Sino Biopharmaceutical, Truly International, and WH Group; Japan’s Cyberagent and Nippon Paint; Taiwan’s Largan Precision and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing.
